Microsoft and ABB team up to build new electric vehicle charging platform
Microsoft is working with Swiss automotive technology company ABB to develop a new electric vehicle fast charging service platform.
ABB is currently one of the largest engineering technology companies in the world, with a total of 140,000 employees worldwide. The company
has previously provided fast charging stations for electric vehicles, but now Microsoft will provide the company with the Azure cloud platform to
ensure that it brings Stable, scalable and advanced charging management capabilities.
The two companies officially announced their partnership at an exhibition in Munich. They said the companies will target “machine learning”
and “predictive analytics” capabilities for future projects.
For Microsoft, the field of cloud computing is a focus of the company”s future development. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in June this year
that building an intelligent cloud platform will become one of Microsoft”s three important investment areas in the future. The partnership with ABB
represents the company”s progress towards this goal.
“Now, we live in a “mobile first”, “cloud first” world, and the global electric vehicle market is no exception.” said Peggy Johnson, executive vice
president of business development at Microsoft .
Our cooperation with ABB is in line with our goal of building an intelligent cloud platform, and we look forward to our technology and services
making ABB solutions unique.
Over the past period of time, the electric vehicle industry has received increasing attention in the technology field. In February this year, Samsung
acquired the battery unit of Canadian automotive supplier Magna International. Samsung SDI, a subsidiary of Samsung Materials and Energy, has
cooperated with BMW since 2009 to jointly develop lithium-ion battery technology. Recently, the two companies announced that they would extend their
partnership to include the BMW i8 and i3 projects.
In addition, Samsung has also invested in Canadian company Seeo, which is engaged in the development of rechargeable batteries for cars.
In addition, Tesla has also stepped up the development of new electric vehicles, and even Apple is preparing to do so. Well-known car manufacturers
such as BMW have also joined the effort. Clearly, we can see that electric vehicle technology has a lot of future potential.
A latest data report from Navigant shows that the market value generated by the electric vehicle charging service field will reach US$3 billion by 2023
, compared with only US$150 million this year.
ABB to supply electrical integration and instrumentation to South African company Sappi
Recently, Nelspruit, South Africa – ABB, the world”s leading power and automation technology group, won a large order from South Africa”s
Sappi Company to provide electrical integration and instrumentation (E&I), as well as distributed control systems ( DCS).
ABB will be responsible for designing, procuring and supplying equipment for Sappi”s Ngodwana plant in Nelpslet, South Africa. This is
part of Go Cell, the capacity expansion project of Sappi chemical fiber factory. This order is another cooperation after ABB successfully
implemented the Amakhulu project for Sappi Saiccor in 2007.
ABB”s scope of supply includes medium-voltage switchgear, low-voltage motor control centers incorporating intelligent motor control,
Profibus intelligent instrumentation , frequency converters and ABB”s leading 800xA control system. These products will help factories achieve their goals
of improving efficiency and reducing energy consumption.
The project is large in scale and complex. In order to deliver the project on time, ABB will deploy experts from integrated pulp and paper
mills in South Africa, Finland and Singapore to form an international team. The project team will ensure that all electrical and automation equipment is installed
and completed within the deadline required by Sappi (the factory is expected to be put into production in 2013).
